About the International centre for Olympic Studies and Education
In 1993 as for recommendation of the International Olympic Committee , with the support of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and the Olympic Academy of Ukraine at the Kiev State Institute of Physical Culture (since 1998 – the National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport) was founded the Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic education.
In 1993 the National Olympic Committee, Olympic Academy of Ukraine, the Olympic Studies Centre jointly with the Kiev State Institute of Physical Culture there was developed a multi-year program of research, education and publishing activities, which was discussed in detail with the IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch, the IOC CEOs and received full support from them.
The Centre was headed by Prof. Vladimir Platonov, D.Sc. (Pedagogy) – the first vice -president of the NOC of Ukraine, the Rector of the Kyiv State Institute of Physical Culture.
1993 - the creation of a department of Olympic and professional sports, headed by the laureate of the State Prize in the field of science and technology of Ukraine, Professor V. Platonov.
1993 - opening of the scientific specialty "Olympic and Professional Sport".
1993 - creation of the publishing house "Olympic literature", which over the years has been published more than 100 books on topical issues of history and formation of the Olympic movement, the issue of increasing the effectiveness of training and competitive activities of athletes, Olympic management, medical and biological and psychological bases. Sports training.
1993 - the launch and holding of the first international scientific congress "Olympic Sport and Sport for All"
1994 - the first in the world book "Olympic sport" (in two books) was created and published in Ukraine, written by professors Volodymyr Platonov and Sergey Guskov (Russia). The first of two books was presented during the XII Olympic Congress in Paris (1994), dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Olympic movement of today, the president of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch.
1994 - creation and publication of the International Scientific and Theoretical Journal "Science in Olympic Sports", the main editor of which was Professor Maria Bulatova.
1998 - the new director of the Center was elected Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Maria Bulatov.
2000 - the opening of regional centers of Olympic research and education on the basis of institutions of higher education of the sports profile of Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkiv.
2008 - the launch of the annual edition of training manuals devoted to the Games of the Olympics, the Winter Olympics and the Youth Olympic Games.
2005, 2009, 2012, 2013 - four episodes of Olympic poster, revealing important pages of the history of the ancient and contemporary Olympic games, tell about the Olympic symbols, introduce famous Ukrainian athletes to the Olympians; board games "Olympic races" and "Olympic lotto", multimedia manual "Olympic travels", multimedia games "Olympic Games of Ancient Greece" and "Revival of Olympic Games".
Annually, an Olympic diary is being drafted for schoolchildren in Ukraine, aimed at involving children in physical education and sports, healthy lifestyles.
2013 - with the support of the International Olympic Committee, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and the Olympic Academy of Ukraine, the Center for Olympic Studies and Olympic Education was granted international status.
The mission of the International Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic education is in promoting the ideals and values of Olympism through acquisition, accumulation and dissemination of knowledge in the field of Olympic sports.
Activities of the International Centre are developed in three main areas: research, education, and publishing.
The main objectives of the Centre are:
- Conducting basic and applied research on the historical, organizational, legal , socio -economic and educational aspects of the Olympic Movement;
- Preparation and publication of scientific, educational and methodical literature which could be in help for a specialist in the field of physical culture and sport, and supply the general public with a system of modern knowledge on the Olympic sports;
- Formation of a reference and information fund for preparation of analytical materials, distribution of information products and consulting on the history and development of the Olympic Movement;
- Creation of favorable environment and providing information resources for training scientific and pedagogical staff through postgraduate education at master, and doctorate level;
- Development and implementation of special programs to attract children and young people to the ideals and values of Olympism through education, upbringing and education of the younger generation;
- Organization of national and international congresses, conferences , workshops and other public events to disseminate scientific knowledge, exchange information and experience among researchers and practitioners in the system olympic sports;
- Development of cooperation with various international and national sporting , scientific and educational institutions and organizations with the aim of formation of integrated space, accumulation and sharing of knowledge in Olympic education and research work.

Awarded the Honored Diploma of the Council of Ministers of Ukraine (2005), the Order of Princess Olha (2010), the Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2005, 2012), the Plato's Medal "For outstanding achievements in the progress of society" (2004), the Award of the International Olympic Committee – Pierre de Coubertin Medal (2009), the Award "Friendship" of Mongolia (2010), the highest award of the International Olympic Academy - "Athena" (2012), Honorary Award of the International Society of Olympic Historians named after the first president of the International Olympic Committee Demetrius Vikelas (2014), Honorary trophy of the IOC President Thomas Bach (2015).
Maria Bulatova is a leading scientist in the field of Olympic education and history of the Olympic sports.
Educational background: the Kyiv State Institute of Physical Culture (Kyiv, Ukraine); Human Biology Department of the Taras Shevchenko State University (Kyiv, Ukraine).
Having started the working career in 1984 from a position of a university researcher and lecturer, she successfully made her way to the head of department and Vice- rector of the National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport. In 2001- 2003 she served as the Head of the State Committee of Ukraine for Physical Culture and Sport – the only woman in the CIS countries.
Successfully combining active teaching, research and public activities, Prof. M. Bulatova is an active member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, member of the Executive Board of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, member of the European Commission on Sport Science in the system of Higher Education, member of the European Commission "Women and Sport". Prof. Maria Bulatova is Honorius Causa of the Universities on Physical Education and Sport in such countries as Venezuela, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, and Mongolia.
Since 1999 Prof. M. Bulatova heads the Olympic Academy of Ukraine, the mission of which is to develop and strengthen the Olympic movement in Ukraine, spiritually enrich people, enhance exchange values of world culture according to the ideas and principles of Olympism.
The author of over 300 works on the preparation of athletes in Olympic sports and the Olympic Movement: " Encyclopedia of Olympic sports " in 5 volumes (1998) , "Encyclopedia of Olympic sports in Questions and Answers ," Ukrainian -Russian- English phrasebook "Olympians speak English "(2009 )," Olympic Sports " in 2 volumes ( 2010 )," Olympic constellation of Ukraine . Athletes "(2010 )," Olympic constellation of Ukraine. Coaches " (2011), "Cultural Heritage of Ancient Greece and Olympic Games" (2011)”, “Olympic Games. 1896 - 2012" in 2 volumes, “First Russian Olympiad. Kiev - 1913", "Track and Field: Encyclopaedia in Questions and Answers" (2015), series of textbooks for children and young people which are devoted to the Olympics; and many others were issued in Brazil, Spain, Italy, China, Lithuania, Malta, Mongolia, Moldova, Poland, Tajikistan, Ukraine.
Publication of "Encyclopedia of Olympic sports in Questions and Answers» was named the best book of the year in the category «From the depth of ages " and was awarded the "Crystal Book" prize 2009). The English version of the publication "Your Guide to the Olympic» was recognized by the European Olympic Committees as a textbook for the education programs of the European Youth Olympic Festivals.

Educational activities
One of the most important activities of the Centre is publication of scientific and educational literature on topical issues of history and formation of the Olympic movement, preparation of athletes in Olympic sports. An important role in the realization of this direction plays fruitful cooperation with the Publishing House "Olympic Literature".

Platonov V., Guskov S. Olympic sport: the handbook for students of higher educational establishments in the field of physical education and sports in the book: in 2 volumes - Kiev, Olympiyska Literatura, 1994 - Bk. 1 - 496 p.; Bk. 2 - 1997 – 384 p.
The book summarizes the history of the Olympic Games of ancient Greece, the Games of the Olympiad and the Olympic Winter Games, kinds of sport represented in their programs. There is presented a fundamentally new material on competitions and competitive activities of athletes, as well as many other aspects concerning Olympic sports – the place of an athlete in modern sports, Olympic sports facilities and the problem of environmental protection, Olympic sport and the media, and others.

Popescu I.K. Small ancient Olympic dictionary. - K.: Olympiyska Literatura, 1999. - 144 p.
The dictionary contains brief information about the history of the Olympic Games, the data on organization, conduct and program of the Olympic Games. Big place is given to articles on sports, life, traditions and major events of ancient history, politicians, scientists and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. There is posted chronology of the Olympic Games of antiquity. The registry of the Dictionary includes 520 of the most used terms and concepts associated with ancient cultural heritage, including physical education and sports, and more than 60 illustrations

Енциклопедія олімпійського спорту в запитаннях і відповідях (автор Булатова М.М., 2009 р.)
Енциклопедія пропонує здійснити екскурс у витоки зародження олімпійського руху головні віхи його розвитку та сьогодення через систему запитань і відповідей.
Книга складається із п'яти частин. Частина І містить широкий довідковий матеріал з історії Олімпійських ігор Стародавньої Греції. У частині II висвітлені питання відродження Олімпійських ігор, створення Міжнародного олімпійського комітету і роль у цьому П’єра де Кубертена. Надана характеристика діяльності восьми президентів Міжнародного олімпійського комітету. У частині III представлено інформацію про олімпійські символи та церемонії, структуру Міжнародної олімпійської системи. In the book of the founder of the Olympic Movement is given the history of contemporary revival of the Olympic Games. The author introduces us to the people who have made a significant contribution to the development of Olympic sports, issues and challenges which they had to face in their work. The book, is published for the first time in our country and may be of any interest for sports professionals, teachers and university students of physical education and sports higher establishments, as well as for those interested in the history of the Olympic Movement and sport.

The Encyclopedia presents a chronology of all the Games of the Olympiads and Olympic Winter Games of modern times, the materials about the Olympic Congresses and IOC Sessions, the Presidents and members of the IOC, here is placed the text of the Olympic Charter. There is delivered the history of development of Olympic sports, are shown the results in various sports at the Games of the Olympiads and Olympic Winter Games. Golden Pages of Ukrainian Olympic sports. Ed. Ivan Fedorenko. – K.: Olympiyska Literatura, 2000. - 192 p.
The book, which has not been created before, absorbed a long research work of sports professionals, brightens a long way of formation and development of the Olympic sports in Ukraine. It is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.

The book presents detailed information related to the Olympic Games of ancient Greece. The reader is given to understand the way the 1913 All-Russian Exposition in Kyiv demonstrated numerous achievements of the country in various sectors of economy, in science, engineering, education, and culture, and in what way the First Russian Olympiad facilitated the development of national sports and of the Olympic movement in the country. Today the Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic Education in Kyiv enjoys a well-deserved reputation and occupies a worthy place in a friendly family of international community the activity of which is related to the Olympic Movement.
The basis of the international aspects of its activity is the close cooperation with the Olympic Studies Centre (Lausanne, Switzerland), the International Olympic Committee (Lausanne, Switzerland), the Olympic museum in Lausanne (Switzerland), Pierre de Coubertin Centre (Lausanne, Switzerland), national Olympic academies of other countries and, above all - with the International Olympic Academy (Olympia, Greece), a movement coordinator on dissemination of Olympic education worldwide. Every year since 1993 the Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic Education of Ukraine delegates its members - academicians, young researchers, students, graduate students, journalists, Olympians - to participate in the sessions and seminars of the International Olympic Academy held in Olympia (Greece). During this time, the educational activities of the International Olympic Academy were attended by more than 100 representatives of Ukraine, who after returning became the ambassadors of the IOA messages in their regions.

Due to the scientific authority, profound experience in the development and implementation of Olympic education, the leading specialists of the Center are invited to deliver lectures and thematic workshops for coaches and scientific workers in Spain, Portugal, France, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia Croatia, Serbia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, China, Korea, Mongolia and others. The authority of the International Olympic Academy invites Ukrainian scientists, as international lecturers to participate in educational activities that take place in Olympia. Thus, the Director of the Centre Professor Maria Bulatova and Doctor Honoris Causa of the NUUPES Sergey Bubka, the NOC of Ukraine President, performe at the sessions and workshops with lectures on the invitation of the International Olympic Academy. The representative of the Sumy branch of the ICOS Alexander Tomenko and representatives of the Kyiv city office of Irina Boiko and Tatiana Rudkovskaya were invited by the International Olympic Academy as coordinators at the sessions for young participants and postgraduate students. In 2002 a postgraduate student of National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport O. Timasheva won the competition announced by the Centre for Olympic Studies of the International Olympic Committee, and was given a special grant that allowed her during four weeks to get acquainted with archival materials and library funds in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne (Switzerland ). This work allowed her to conduct comprehensive research on the environmental policy of the IOC. In 2008 young representatives of the Centre Yakov Scherbashyn and Olga Apalkova won the right to represent our country at the Youth Festival "Sport, Culture, Art" being held in Bursa (Turkey). Representatives of Ukraine Alena Zaronyants and George Lopatenko won a grant of the International Olympic Academy and the Peloponnesian University to study at the International Olympic Academy for the master's program "Olympic studies, Olympic Education, Organization and Management of Olympic sport."

In the early 90th of the XX century the NOC of Ukraine NUUPES and the Olympic Academy of Ukraine, the Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic Education initiated the holding of international scientific congress "Olympic sport", which eventually became traditional and regular. The first (1993) and second (1997), fourth (2000), ninth (2005), fourteenth (2010) and nineteenth (2015) of the Congresses "Modern Olympic sport" were held in the capital of Ukraine - Kyiv. At the congresses there are discussed the most important problems of the modern Olympic sport, including various aspects of the theory and methodology of athletes preparation in Olympic sports; allowed means to improve efficiency, reduce fatigue, speed up recovery after heavy training and competitive loading, the problem of doping and struggle against it, women's sports, Sport for All, health of athletes etc. The programs of each of these congresses include active work of the section of Olympic education. Each of these international scientific congresses was attended by 300 to 500 specialists from Europe, Asia, Africa, America - that makes them quite significant events in the world of Olympic sport and sport science. An effective impetus for search of innovative approaches to the development of the Olympic movement and promotion of the ideas of Olympism in Ukraine had become the Continental Seminar "Olympic education: education, healthy lifestyles, social adaptation" under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee and National Olympic Committee of Ukraine dedicated to the 15th anniversary of Olympic Academy and Olympic Studies Center of Ukraine.
The Center for Olympic Studies of Ukraine cooperates with the organizing committees of almost all major scientific meetings taking place in the country, contributing to broad introduction to their programs the works on the most actual problems of the Olympic sports. International conferences on modern sports medicine did not remain aloof. Leading scientists of Ukraine - the permanent participants of Pre-Olympic Scientific Congresses, held in 1992 in Torre Molinos (Spain), in 1996 - in Dallas (USA), in 2000 - in Brisbane (Australia), 2004 - Thessaloniki ( Greece), in 2006 - in Pinerollo (Italy), 2008 - in Guangzhou (China). By the invitation of National Olympic Committees, National Olympic Academies, National Centers for Olympic Studies the leading experts of Ukraine in the field of Olympic sport deliver lectures in higher educational establishments around the world: Mongolia, Venezuela, Slovakia, Italy, Spain, China, Korea, Egypt, France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Poland, Lithuania, Malaysia, Cuba. Foreign colleagues are always welcomed guests in Ukraine. They are not only participants of international conferences and symposia that take place in Ukraine. Representatives of national Centers for Olympic studies of other countries come here to exchange experiences on organization of research on Olympic sports, dissemination of the Olympic ideals among the population, involvment of young people in the Olympic movement and healthy lifestyle. For our country it has been proved to be the most important the activities of the IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch and Jacques Rogge, who headed the IOC at a time when Ukraine had gained its state independence. They repeatedly visited our country and have done much for the development of the Olympic movement and popularized the successes and achievements of Ukraine Olympic community. Their visits became a historical landmark not only in the history of the national Olympic movement, but also the entire social and political life of our country. Taking an active part in various international events, the Centre for Olympic Studies forms a positive image of our country as a worthy member of the entire world Olympic community.

Significant event for the whole Olympic family of Ukraine was the election of the Director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic Education Professor Maria Bulatova into the IOC Commission "Culture and Olympic Heritage."
President of the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH) Mr. David Wallechinsky (USA) presents “Vikelas Demetrius Plaque”, the honorary award named after the first president of the International Olympic Committee Demetrius Vikelas, to Prof. Maria Bulatova, Director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic education, for her significant personal contribution to the international Olympic movement and Olympic education.
Sergey Bubka, the NOC of Ukraine President, presents the trophy the IOC President Thomas Bach to Prof. Maria Bulatova, Director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies and Olympic education, for her significant contribution to the development and promotion of the Olympic movement in Ukraine and the world.
